WHITE HORSES OF THE CAMARGUE, FRANCE. April 6 -13, 2013
Even if you don’t ride horses, you have to appreciate their beauty and grace when they are in motion. They are magnificent, powerful, and very exciting to photograph. In the Spring of 2013, I am co-leading a photo workshop to photograph the white horses of the Camargue. This is a marshy region in southern France where the horses have been living for 5000 years. The Romans knew them, and whenever you see a painting of Napoleon rearing on a white horse, he was riding one of these wonderful horses.
During the workshop, we will photograph the horses running through marshes, running in the surf at the beach, and running free in a field where you can pan with slow shutter speeds for artistic blurs or use faster speeds to freeze the action. In addition, we will have a session with mothers and foals (the young horses are born black and it takes them five years to turn white) as well as two sessions with stallions battling for domination. We will have 8 sessions in total at sunrise and sunset to take advantage of the best lighting. This is a very special photo opportunity that may very well produce some of the best images you’ve ever taken.
On the last day of the workshop we will have a critique session, and in late afternoon light we will photograph flamingos, herons, egrets, and other water birds in a nearby bird park. At this time of year, there are thousands of flamingos that feed only a few feet away from where we stand. It’s exciting to see them land on the water and fly past us in huge numbers.
My co-leader in this workshop is Adam Jones, a sensational photographer and extremely knowledgeable instructor. Adam and I complement each other, and you’ll benefit tremendously from our 80 years of combined experience in photography.
