Botswana offers one of the greatest photo opportunities in Africa for wildlife. There are fewer tourists and fewer vehicles, and this means the animals aren’t surrounded by land rovers and vans as they often are in East Africa. This photo tour encompasses some of the best game parks in southern Africa where you will have up-close encounters with the most spectacular animals on the planet. The vehicles we use are open so you have an unencumbered view to easily shoot from any angle, and the lodges we stay in are beautiful with delicious food and a warm and welcoming staff.

If you are considering this photo tour and want to talk to Jim about what equipment to bring, drop him an email and he’ll be happy to speak with you on the phone about equipment or any aspect of the trip.

ITINERARY

DAY 1, May 23: Depart the U.S. for Johannesburg, South Africa

DAY 2, May 24: Arrive in Johannesburg and overnight at the Legacy Grand Airport Hotel. This will give you a chance to recuperate from the long flight with a good night’s sleep.

DAYS 3, 4, 5, May 25 – 27: This morning you take the complimentary shuttle to the airport and connect with your flight to Maun, Botswana. Arrive in Maun and connect with your charter flight to Moremi National Park. Arrive in time to freshen up before lunch and the afternoon game viewing activity, which can be done by either a 4×4 game vehicle or boat.

Camp Moremi brings true meaning to the word safari in the Xaxanaka area of Moremi Game Reserve. Here, where the life-giving waters of the Okavango meet up with the vast Kalahari, ancient Mopane forests, open grassland, seasonal floodplains and Riverine habitats have formed, creating one of the most magnificent and welcoming animal sanctuaries in all of Africa. Shaded by giant ebony trees, the magnificent Moremi tree lodge is an elegant elevated thatch and timber structure, consisting of a main lounge, wildlife reference library, dining room and cocktail bar. The Moremi Reserve is rated as one of Africa’s finest game-viewing areas, offering sanctuary to abundant herds of elephant, sable, giraffe, tsessebe, lechwe, wildebeest, impala and waterbuck. Lion, leopard, cheetah, wild dog and hyena complete the picture. Birding is quite spectacular, especially early in the morning. The game viewing activity can be by an open 4×4 land rover, powerboat or traditional dugout canoe (mokoro) on the Okavango Delta’s waterways. Spend time relaxing around the pool or catch up on your reading. Depart on the afternoon game viewing activity before returning back to camp for dinner. Enjoy after dinner drinks around the campfire.

Camp Moremi – fully inclusive (breakfast, lunch, dinner).

DAYS 6, 7, 8, May 28 – 30: After breakfast we take another chartered flight to Savuti, part of the famous Chobe National park.

The Savute area in Botswana boasts some of the most fascinating wildlife interactions in Africa. The Savute Marsh has been dry for more than twenty years but it is still a wildlife haven. It is on the banks of Botswana’s fabled Stolen River, and you will find the Savute Safari Lodge in a setting of singular beauty. The often dry Savute channel is part of the dynamic Savute eco system renowned for its large concentration of elephants and lions. Whether seen in the dry season when it can appear desert-like and barren beyond belief or after a rain on one of those crystal clear days across the vivid green of new grass, the impression is always breathtaking.
We awake early in the morning for breakfast and our game viewing activity. During mid-day when the sun is too harsh to photograph, you can relax until the afternoon game viewing activity when the low angled sun provides stunning late afternoon light.

Savuti Safari Lodge – fully inclusive (breakfast, lunch, dinner).

DAYS 9 - 11, May 31 – June 2: After breakfast and the morning game viewing activity take the chartered flight to Kasane Airport. On arrival you will be transferred to Chobe Game Lodge. Arrive in time for lunch and the afternoon game viewing activity, which is either a river cruise or a 4×4 game drive.

The Chobe National Park is renowned for Africa’s largest concentration of elephants and is an all year round big game and birding destination. Picturesquely situated about 50 miles west of the Victoria Falls, overlooking the Chobe River and the Caprivi floodplains, the iconic Chobe Game Lodge is the only permanent safari lodge within the Chobe National Park. Here is the best place where you can see elephants crossing the Chobe River en masse or perhaps you’ll capture elephants walking past a setting sun. It’s a magical place to photograph and to experience.

Dinner and overnight at the Chobe Game Lodge — full inclusive (breakfast, lunch, dinner).

DAYS 12, 13, June 3 – 4:  After breakfast and the morning game viewing activity we transfer by road to Zimbabwe and the hotel at Victoria Falls in Zambia. You will need to pass through the border post between Botswana and Zambia at Kazungula. At 4pm we depart on a sundowner cruise on the mighty Zambezi River. We are on the lookout for hippos and exotic birds along the river banks. While on the cruise enjoy drinks and hot snacks. Our hotel is within easy walking distance of one of the world’s seven natural wonders – the Victoria Falls. This is truly one of the most impressive things you’ll ever see.

Overnight at the Zambezi Sun – (Breakfast)

DAY 14, June 5: After breakfast we transfer to Livingstone Airport for the flight to Johannesburg. On arrival at OR Tambo International Airport we connect with our flight home, knowing that we’ve seen and photographed some of the most amazing sights ever.
