To use or not to use fill flash

For most of my out door portraits, I avoid using fill fiash.  Fill flash is great for low light circumstances or when you specifically want to create a very unique look (such as illuminating a subject against a dramatic sunset sky), but usually I prefer to use available light.  Fill flash, especially when used on-camera, is flat.  It takes away the depth and dimension in a picture.  This portrait of a costumed young lady at the Jember Fashion Carnaval in Indonesia was standing in the shade of a building, and I took advantage of the soft and diffused light to make this picture.  Had I used flash, even if it were reduced in output by one full f/stop, this portrait ...
