These are Galah cockatoos, exquisite birds native to Australia. Even though I photographed them in captivity, it’s still hard to come up with a winning shot. They constantly move, they reposition themselves all the time, and their inquisitive nature means they are constantly surveying their environment, The biggest challenge in this kind of shot, though, was depth of field. It was essential that each bird be in sharp focus. Anything less wouldn’t result in a good picture. The diffused light was relatively low, so that meant the small lens aperture needed for DOF would force the ISO to be high. I couldn’t compromise on shutter speed because I was using a long lens, so my only option was to raise the ISO until I felt I had enough depth of field so all three birds were sharp. My settings were 1/400, f/14, and 3200 ISO.

Michael Woodward - Was in Australia last year and found it to be a photographic feeding frenzy everywhere I went. So much to see and so little time.
