This is a Gila monster, the only venomous lizard native to the United States. While a bite from one of these reptiles is rarely fatal to humans, it can cause some very nasty symptoms. I found this guy in the Arizona desert, and to keep my distance I used a 500mm focal length. Gila monsters are quite slow, so shooting from about 30 feet away made me feel safe enough to lie on the ground for the dramatic low-angled perspective that makes such a difference with so many types of subjects, especially wildlife. My settings were 1/1600, f/11, and 800 ISO.
