There's something about great grey owls that I find very compelling They are so majestic and so powerful, and it's hard to turn your attention away from those piercing yellow eyes. It's thrilling to photograph them. I took this shot near Calgary, Alberta in Canada last winter using my standard settings for birds in flight: 1/3200, f/11, and 4000 ISO. With such large birds, I could slow the shutter down to 1/2000 and thereby lower the ISO, but I'd prefer the guarantee that even the wing tips are going to be sharp with the faster shutter. My photo workshop for this coming January is sold out, so the next available date is February 2027.
