My drone photography tour in Iceland begins tomorrow, and I arrived one day early as I always do because I don't trust the airline nor the weather. Driving from the airport into the capital city, Reykjavik, we passed a volcanic eruption. It was the first one I've seen, and although this isn't a great image, it was exciting to see and photograph. I was probably about a mile from the magma shooting up from the ground, so I had to use a long focal length -- 500mm plus a 1.4x giving me 700mm of focal length. The volcanic activity covered a huge area -- much larger than you see here -- but the other pillars of fire were further away. I don't know yet if there is a closer approach, but for maximum drama I need to be much closer. We'll see. Lots of people were stopping on the highway to shoot the eruption. Hopefully I'll have better images to share soon. My settings were 1/800, f/10, and 2000 ISO.
