Jember Fashion Carnival

I photographed this 6-year old little girl as she was getting made up for the Jember Fashion Carnival in Jember, East Java, Indonesia. I find it intriguing how people of most cultures decorate faces for festivals, religious ceremonies, weddings, and other important events. In Venice, most costumed participants wear masks. At the festival in Jember, on the other hand, both children and young adults use the face as a canvas on which they express their creativity and make art. Some of the creations are beautiful while others are bizarre, but they are all exciting to photograph. This girl was so petite I had to lower myself on one knee just to be at eye level with her. I used a 70-200mm telephoto set to 200mm, and the settings were 1/100, f/6.3, and 640 ISO.
