These are two Japanese cranes involved in a mating dance on the island of Hokkaido. I took this in 2015, and at the time my go-to telephoto lens was a Canon 100-400mm. To get this frame-filling shot, I added a 2x teleconverter giving me 800mm of focal length. This resulted in a loss of two f/stops. My camera settings were 1/800, f/9, and 800 ISO. In retrospect, I should have used a faster shutter, but 10 years ago noise was still a serious issue and I opted for a relatively low ISO. I had done some test shots to make sure the white feathers and the snow weren't adversely affecting the meter reading.
