When baby giraffes are born, they are about six feet tall. This picture gives you a sense of scale of just how huge the adults are. This newborn was clinging to its mother for protection and, at the same time, it looking at my Land Rover and probably trying to figure out what kind of crazy animal this is. I took this shot with a 500mm focal length, and the settings were 1/500, f/11, and 200 ISO. I used to go on Safari with a Canon 500mm f/4 telephoto, but a few years ago I switched to the 100-500mm zoom because it was significantly lighter and also because I really like the zoom range. It allows so much flexibility in terms of composition. Canon now has a 200-800mm lens that I'm considering.
