This is a wild mountain goat on the top of 14,000 foot Mt. Evans in Colorado. I positioned myself so the sun was directly behind the animal providing brilliant backlighting. I was surprised how close several of the goats came -- I used a 24-105mm lens set to 100mm for this shot. The goat was in the middle of a molt in which the thick winter coat was being shed for the short alpine summer. In the past, when we shot film and didn't have the immediate visual feedback of our exposures, I would have taken a light reading on the sky, using it as a gray card. But now we can see exactly how accurate our exposurs are and, if necessary, tweak them on the fly until they are perfect. The settings were 1/320, f/16, and 200 ISO.
