Porcupines allow a close approach because they really aren't afraid of anyone. They don't have to be. I took this picture in British Columbia, Canada, with a 200mm focal length. It's a little tricky photographing porcupines because their faces are so dark. If their quills are light, there is a contrast problem. My approach is to expose to the right on the histogram to lighten the dark facial features, but at the same time I watch the exposure on the quills so as not to blow them out. Porcupines climb trees, and it was interesting to watch this one navigate the branches and pine needles to get to where it wanted to go. My settings were. 1/250, f/8, 320 ISO.
