Serendipity doesn’t happen often, but when it does, it’s thrilling. I was in Namibia with a photo tour group, and we were shooting the spectacular sand dunes in the Namib Desert in the late afternoon. Out of the corner of my eye I saw someone way up on the top of the dune, and I remember thinking, what in the heck is he doing up there. Then, he runs and jumps off the dune, taking flight in a hang glider. It was spectacular. I’m sure he wasn’t thinking about photography, composition, or lighting, but from our perspective where we were standing on the ground, he sailed back and forth across the dune perfectly. The sun illuminated the hang glider, and the contrast with the dark shadow on the dune in the background couldn't have been better. The flight path he took was as if I'd requested it. I used a 70-200mm lens set to 147mm, and the settings were 1/400, f/5.0, and 200 ISO.
