I made this portrait of Siberian husky puppies against a black velvet so nothing in the background detracted from the subjects. Velvet absorbs light better than other fabrics. I had to use a telephoto lens or else the pups would be climbing all over me. The long lens meant depth of field was an issue, and even though I took this picture with an aperture of f/16, it was still important that both of the faces were equidistant to the camera. Only then would I be assured the depth of field was sufficient to render both of these beautiful puppies sharply. The only thing I did to this image in Photoshop was to use the dodge tool to lighten the eyes slightly. The ambient daylight didn’t fill the eyes with light like a flash would have, but I wanted a more natural look with respect to lighting. My shutter speed was 1/400, the ISO was 1000, and I used daylight white balance in the shade of my backyard. The intensity of the pups' expressions remind me of their wolf ancestors.
