Backlighting during the middle part of the day produces silhouettes and high contrast. But backlighting when the sun is close to the horizon creates a much softer, low in contrast situation, and you can capture the beautiful light without losing detail in the subject. I photographed this leopard just minutes before sunset; the sun was strong enough to make the cat’s fangs glow yet soft enough to allow us to see detail in the fur facing away from the sun. My settings were 1/400, f/4.0, and 200 ISO. The leopard was snarling at its mate.
