We had an epic morning yesterday with sightings of six different jaguars. Given their range and the density of the vegetation where they live, this was especially remarkable. Not all cats were in photogenic locations, though, but this one had climbed up a tree and was leisurely surveying his domain when we found him. I took this with a 450mm focal length on my hand-holdable Canon 100-500mm telephoto, and the settings were 1/1000, f/7.1, and 2500 ISO. The maximum lens aperture of f/7.1 when using the telephoto zoom at or near full extension forces the ISO to be relatively high, but I’m willing to pay that price in exchange for an easily hand-holdable lens with the flexibility of composition due to the zoom range.
