This is a large flying fox (a fruit bat) I photographed a few years ago at the entrance of a restaurant in Bali, Indonesia. It was actually hanging upside down on a short tree; I’m presenting the image rotated 180 degrees so it’s easier to see. There are 35 different bat species that inhabit Bali. I was quite surprised this bat felt comfortable enough to be close to the activity of the restaurant. I used a 70-200mm telephoto for the shot -- which tells you how close I was -- and my settings were 1/250, f/3.5, and 640 ISO. Today I would have used a smaller lens aperture for a little more depth of field regarding the orange hair, but back then I was so concerned about digital noise. Therefore, I wanted to keep the ISO below 800 or 1000. I find bats to be quite intriguing, but also very, very creepy. They are amazing creatures.
