We are so used to seeing colorful macaws like this in zoos and bird parks that it’s become commonplace and not that big of a deal. For me, seeing macaws in the wild -- especially within telephoto range -- was pretty exciting. I photographed this pair of red and green macaws at a huge sinkhole in Brazil. I was looking down on them as they were perched on a branch below me. I used a Canon 500mm f/4 telephoto along with a 1.4x teleconverter giving me 700mm of focal length. My settings were 1/500, f/7.1, and 1250 ISO. The depth of field was extremely shallow with such a long lens, and the only reason I was able to hold focus on both birds was because they were equidistance to the camera. In other words, the branch was parallel with the plane of the digital sensor.
