The number one reason I use Photoshop is to fix problems in photography. In this particular case, there was a depth of field issue. I took the shot at the Jane Goodall Sweetwaters Chimpanzee Sanctuary in Kenya. The chimps live in a huge area of many acres, albeit in captivity. They are very curious, and when people walk up to the electrified wire that encloses the compound they often come very close to investigate the new visitors. This mother was sitting just a foot or two on the other side of the fence, so I lay on the ground so I was about 3 or 4 feet way. To focus closely and to fill the frame with the baby's face, I put an extension tube on my 70-200mm zoom. This allowed me to focus closer than the zoom lens permitted without the tube. The openings in the fence were large enough to easily accommodate the lens, but when I focused on the young eyes, the mother's hand was significantly out of focus. The images looked terrible; I hate out of focus foregrounds especially when parts of the subject are soft. There wasn't enough light to use f/32 without going crazy with ISO, so the only thing I could do was to take two shots, one where I focused on the eyes and then a second one in which I focused on the hand. In Photoshop, I composited the two images together. This gave me complete depth of field.
