This is one of my favorite pictures from the Pantanal in Brazil. Jaguars are powerful swimmers, and when this one entered the river headed right for the boat I was in, I grabbed the shot with a Canon 500mm f/4 telephoto. However, as the cat got closer, I had to quickly switch to a 70-200mm. It was this picture and this situation that convinced me to trade the f/4 fixed focal length telephoto for a 100-500mm zoom. It’s so much more flexible, and even though light is lost with the zoom, I believe this was the right decision. The camera settings for this shot were 1/1600, f/8, and 1250 ISO.
