I usually avoid taking pictures of people in direct sunlight, and I assiduously avoid shooting people in dappled lighting. This portrait of a priest in Greece violated both of my standard operating procedures, and yet I think it turned out well. This just goes to show that so many rules and guidelines we photographers adhere to can be broken. In the original capture, there were three small areas of glare on the man’s nose and cheek. The direct sun reflected off the natural skin oils and it created some hot spots that needed to be removed. They were distracting. It was an easy job using the clone tool on a lowered opacity. I used a 70-200mm lens for the shot, and the settings were 1/250, f/7.1, and 400 ISO.
