I photographed this amorous couple in the Masai Mara National Reserve in Kenya. I used a 500mm f/4 telephoto -- a fixed focal length lens -- and had I been using a zoom lens (like the 100-500mm) I would have zoomed back a little to include the top of the male's head. Still, I do like the tight and intimate composition. Besides the weight of fast telephotos, the real advantage of telephoto zooms is the ability to be flexible in composing scenes. My settings were 1/1000, f/8, and 200 ISO. It's hard to look at this picture and still think animals don't have feelings. My next photo tour to Kenya that includes blinds is March 2026.
