I photographed this Steller’s sea eagle on the island of Hokkaido in Japan in the winter. Among the largest eagles in the world, its wingspan is about 8 feet wide. They need the extra lift, though, because these birds are also among the heaviest eagles in the world. Females can weight up to 21 pounds. Eagles are relatively slow fliers, which means a super fast shutter speed isn’t required to freeze the movement of their wings. I took this shot with a Canon 500mm f/4 telephoto, and the settings were 1/1250, f/14, and 800 ISO.
