After posting yesterday the haunting beauty of a soon-to-be-demolished historical building, I thought an uplifting image was in order. I photographed these adorable meerkats in Namibia at sunset. They are so entertaining and so comical, and they also move so fast that you're lucky to get a decent composition. It took a lot of patience. This was the one and only trip to Africa that I brought too large lenses -- a 300mm f/2.8 and a 500mm f/4. I never did that again because I probably lost 5 inches of height due to the incredible weight I carried! As much as I like everything to be in focus, I think the ultra soft background behind the meerkats was perfect. I used the 300mm f/2.8 telephoto for this shot, and the settings were 1/1000, f/5.0, and 320 ISO.
