This is a caracal, a beautiful African cat with tufted ears and golden eyes. It is primarily nocturnal, but it will also hunt during daylight hours if opportunities present themselves. I was very lucky with the lighting here; the low angle from shooting early in the morning made the beautiful face come alive. I used a 500mm telephoto for this shot, and the settings were 1/800, f/5.6, and 1000 ISO. Shooting through vegetation often means out of focus elements obscure the subject to a certain degree. Sometimes I clean that up in Photoshop; here I eliminated one unappealing branch and made the background less distracting.
