I am in the Simien Mountains now in northern Ethiopia. This is where you can see and photograph — at surprisingly close range — Gelada baboons. This is a baby clinging to its mother in diffused late afternoon sunlight. I was in the middle of about 100 baboons, and it was quite possible to sit down on the grass have some of the animals sit right next to me as they ate, played, and groomed each other. I used a 400mm focal length on my 100-500mm zoom, and the settings were 1/1000, f/6.3, and 4000 ISO. I could have used a much shorter focal length, but I didn’t want to lose this cute expression. And I also like the background bokeh.
