I maintain that photography taught me to really see art and composition. Before I picked up a camera, I was essentially blind to the beauty around me. One of the things I learned early on in my career was to identify strong graphic design -- in other words, subjects or scenes with beautiful and artistic lines. What drew me to this shot of giraffes in Kenya was the interesting and attractive arrangement of the three animals. Moments like this are fleeting; you have to recognize the art of the situation and react quickly. Of course, what you are not seeing are all of the graphic opportunities I missed, but I caught this one. My settings were 1/320, f/5.6, and 2500 ISO, and on a 100-500mm zoom I was set to 330mm.
