I wonder if meerkats know how cute they are. I think they probably do. That's why they sit and pose for photographers in such an endearing way -- almost like a dog asking for another treat. I captured this little family in Namibia in sunset lighting, and I was very lucky that all the animals were on the same plane -- i.e., equidistant to the camera. That meant it was easy to maintain depth of field exactly where I needed it. This was one of my first trips to Namibia, and I carried two long Canon lenses with me -- a 300mm f/2.8 and a 500mm f/4. I never did that again. Way too much weight and volume. I shot this picture with the 300mm f/2.8, and the settings were 1/1000, f/5.0, and 320 ISO.
