I took this very unusual landscape photograph at water level in the Ijen Crater on the island of Java in Indonesia. There are 130 active volcanos in this island nation, and this is one of them. The yellow rocks are sulfur, and the smoke is sulfur dioxide, a noxious gas that requires a gas mask to be able to breathe. The strange but beautiful mint green water is highly acidic. I dared not touch it because it’s essentially liquid car battery acid. It is a mixture of hydrochloric and sulfuric acids, and touching it causes immediate and severe chemical burns. I used a 16mm wide angle for this shot, and the settings were 1/30, f/32, and 200 ISO.
