This unlikely image was taken from a subterranean blind situated in such a way that photographers are seated at water level with the small manmade pond built to attract wildlife. A one-way glass made it impossible for animals to see us, and my group and I wore dark clothes in the small room painted black so nothing would give us away. When this elephant came from our blind side to suddenly be in full view, I have to admit it was totally thrilling but also quite intimidating. To be within 8 to 10 feet of a 13,000 pound monster is nothing less than breathtaking. We had to be perfectly quiet lest our presence be detected. I took this shot with a 28mm focal length (on a 24-105mm lens), and the settings were 1/160, f/7.1, and 6400 ISO. My next photo tour to Kenya in which subterranean blinds will play a role in awesome photography is March 2026.

Jim - I know, Barb, and that made it even more scary. It was like he or she was staring at me.
