Believe it or not, I took this picture at a Christmas parade in Puerto Rico. Not exactly Santa Claus in a red and white outfit! The problem with parades, though, is that it's hard to find an artistic composition with an attractive background in which non-participant onlookers wearing street clothes are eliminated from the festivities. The original background behind the subject was a complete mess. Distracting elements made the picture worthless. In Photoshop, I carefully selected the costume using the pen tool and then replaced the background with another shot from the same parade. This time, I used dancers with colorful dresses taken with a shutter speed of 1/30th of a second to abstract all that motion and color. My settings for the costumed participant were 1/500, f/8, and 200 ISO, and I used a 70-200mm lens for the shot.
