Since much of the U.S. is getting hit by an Arctic blast (it's going down to 12 degrees Fahrenheit tonight here in the Nashville area), I thought this image would be appropriate. A few years ago I bought a detailed replica of a saber tooth cat skull (these animals went extinct about 10,000 years ago), and to make it look like I'd stumbled across a great paleontological find, I placed the skull in a large Tupperware container full of water. This was put in the freezer for 24 hours until it was frozen solid, and then I removed the container and was left with a block of ice. I brought it outside in the shade of my house and photographed it making sure the back of the camera -- i.e. the plane of the digital sensor -- was parallel with the surface of the ice to maximize depth of field. I used a 50mm macro lens for the shot, and the settings were 1/50, f/22, and 200 ISO. There is a slight bluish cast caused by the deep shade, and I kept that because blue implies 'cold' in a wintry scene.
