This unique and dramatic formation is called Long Dong Silver (really). It's located in northern Utah near the small town of Hanksville. From the parking area, it's a mile walk on flat ground. It's well worth the effort as you can see. I also shot this with a drone, but much to my surprise I think the ground-based shot is better. In this kind of desert environment with very little rain, footprints and tire tracks in the sand scar the floor of the desert for, sometimes, more than 100 years (in Death Valley, you can still see wagon tracks for the 1849er's). So, in this shot, I cloned out quite a few markings that degraded the image in my opinion. I used a 24mm focal length for this shot, and the settings were 1/200, f/11, and 500 ISO. Most people, and I do as well, consider this a sunset shot.
