A year ago I built a house in the middle of the woods in Tennessee, and there is a profusion of life all around me. This morning, my wife spotted a luna moth, newly emerged, clinging to one of our window screens. When butterflies and moths first emerge from their chrysalid (or cocoon), they can't fly. It takes an hour or two for them to pump their body fluids throughout their wings and abdomen. I've photographed these beautiful mint green silk moths for years, but I never had one, essentially, come knocking on my door. Moths are easier to photograph than butterflies because, at rest, most moths hold their wings flat. That makes it a lot easier to hold focus on the entire insect. My settings for this image were 1/60, f/16, and 2500 ISO.
