When doing macro photography, it's important to make the plane of the digital sensor as parallel as possible with the plane of the subject. That contributes to the depth of field. In this shot of mating Malay lacewing butterflies, I used f/11 instead of f/32 because I was handholding the camera and the light level was fairly low. I didn't want to raise the ISO higher than absolutely necessary. Making the back of the camera as parallel as possible enabled me to have as much depth of field as possible. I photographed these butterflies in Bali, Indonesia, and the settings were 1/1000, f/11, and 6400 ISO. I used a 100-400mm Canon zoom set to 214mm.
