I photographed this male lion laying on grass in Kenya. Late afternoon light illuminated the cat's face beautifully. The shadowed part of the grass directs our attention to the subject ---- the eye and the surrounding hair. I often create this kind of lighting in post-processing using the dodge tool and the burn tool. Here, nature did it for me. The lion was looking directly at me and I always wondered what he was thinking. The Land Rover I was in could approach the cat closely -- I used a 70-200mm lens for the shot. My settings were 1/500, f/11, and 250 ISO.
