I took this image in the Palouse region of Washington State. It is a 30 second exposure in which I used a flashlight to paint the landscape and the barn with light. I did a couple of test shots to determine the exposure. Notice the texture on the grass; that came from the fact that I walked about 30 feet from the camera so I could sidelight the scene. This produced a much more pleasing image that I would have had from front lighting it. I got really lucky with the clouds. In the dark of night, they could hardly be seen. With the long exposure, though, all that detail was revealed. My other settings were f/2.8 and 2500 ISO, and I set the camera to daylight white balance.

Jim - Thanks so much, Lois. The Palouse is the perfect place for painting with light.

Linda Purdom - Wow, that is just and amazing shot. That's one I would frame, put on the wall, and look at every day. The stories that could be inspired by that photo!
