This is a panther chameleon, native to Madagascar. It is one of the animals I usually have in my frog and reptile workshop in Kansas City. I always look for unusual perspectives because that often leads to dynamic visual images. That’s what I did here. Shooting straight down on the chameleon’s head, waiting for the independently moving eyes to position themselves well, I used my ring flash off the side to underscore the unique texture of the reptilian skin. I took this with a 50mm macro lens, and the settings were 1/200, f/32 and 100 ISO. In macro work, I go for the most depth of field possible so we can see and appreciate all of the wonderful detail in the subjects -- hence the smallest lens aperture possible. The next Frog and Reptile workshop will be June, 2026.
