I have conducted many photo tours to photograph snowy owls in Canada, and only one time was I able to capture one of the birds backlit by the sun. It happened for only an instant. I used a 400mm focal length, and the settings were 1/3200, f/11, and 800 ISO. I was shooting at 20 frames per second in an effort to catch every nuance of the wing positions. In post-processing, I used Photoshop's dodge tool to lighten the underside of the wings, the face, and the chest. Due to the bright background, the front of the owl had become too dark for my taste.
