These are king penguins on the island of South Georgia. I took this shot on the way down to Antarctica. In order to show the full extent of the colony, I had to get an elevated perspective. Climbing a nearby hill gave me the angle I wanted, and with a medium telephoto -- a 70-200mm -- the classic compression of long lenses provided the look that visually conveyed the remarkable scene. The brown penguins are the chicks. My settings were 1/100, f/13, and 400 ISO. The diffused light was ideal, but even had the sun been out, the extreme low angle typical of being so far south would have been ok, too.
