When I conduct a nature tour to Indonesia, we visit the Indonesian state of Kalimantan on the island of Borneo. To attract wild orangutans to within telephoto range, rangers put bananas on an elevated platform. It's very cool to see the huge tropical trees sway back and forth as orangs traverse through the jungle. This alpha male wasn't interested in the food -- he was just hanging out watching my tour group pass by. I was expecting to use a long lens, so I had my 100-500mm Canon zoom mounted on the camera. I quickly changed to a 24-105mm and took this shot with a 55mm focal length. I held my breath, hoping the primate wouldn't change his remarkable pose. I was absolutely amazed he allowed such a close approach, and I was equally amazed he held this pose for several minutes. My settings were 1/250, f/5.6, and 640 ISO.
