This is a southern yellow-billed hornbill that landed on a branch of a tree quite close to where I was standing. I took this shot in Namibia with a 400mm focal length. Given the close proximity, I was able to fill the frame with the bird’s interesting face. This image is uncropped. What struck me immediately, though, was the backlighting. The bird’s huge bill seems to be glowing from within, making the colors particularly intense and saturated. The camera settings were 1/400, f/7.1, and 400 ISO.
