Two owls

To prevent these Verreaux’s eagle-owls from becoming silhouettes against the bright sky, I used flash and balanced the foreground with the background. Just like with people, the flash reflected off the retina in the back of their eyes and produced a very ghoulish and bizarre red reflection. I actually liked the very unusual result, but I cloned the red out to compare, and I liked the natural look more. These are the largest owls in Africa with a wing span of about 7 feet. I captured this image in Kenya with a Canon 500mm telephoto plus a 1.4x teleconverter giving me 700mm of focal length. The settings were 1/200, f/10, and 1000 ISO.
