These are California myotis bats drinking on the wing in pitch darkness. The bats were drawn to the water in a small, manmade pond because Arizona’s Sonoran Desert is so dry. An electronic beam crossed the pond, and I prefocused on the beam just before dark. When a bat broke the beam, two flash units were triggered, one of either side of the water. The exposure time was 30 seconds, and in that time-period two bats crossed the beam. The lens aperture was f22, and the ISO was 1250. I determined the exposure just before dark with some test shots. The focal length I used was 560mm.

Jim Steadman - Jim, I don't think tou could have captured this crystal clear shot of the bats with a 30 second exposure. Or did I read it wrong? Regardless, it is a teriffic photo!
