This is a gray langur monkey that was getting groomed by a friend right next to a country road in India. I took this with a 180mm focal length because my vehicle was able to park really close to the animals. My settings were 1/250, f/3.5, and 100 ISO. You can never go wrong with soft and diffused light like this for outdoor portraits -- human or animal -- because this kind of light shows as much detail as possible without contrast getting in the way. When shadows go dark and highlights are too light, and when unattractive shadows get in the way of facial features, the pictures are always disappointing. Soft light also extends the shooting time in a day. Instead of only sunrise and sunset lighting, which are great, of course, you can use soft light to shoot throughout the day. As soon as direct sunlight appears from mid-morning onward, good photography is finished. The best you can hope for when this happens is shade.
