The volcano in the immediate foreground is Mt. Bromo which formed only 8000 years ago. It sits in the Tengger caldera complex in central Java, the main island in Indonesia. The caldera itself resulted from a massive eruption about 45,000 years ago -- imagine how cool THAT picture would have been! I took this shot from an elevated vantage perspective at dawn. The light was very low, so to bring out the subtle reddish colors I used a 20 second exposure. The focal length I used was 80mm, and the other settings were f/4 and 250 ISO. This place has become very popular with Chinese tourists, so in order to get a good position to photograph this scene I had to leave the hotel at 3am. The elevation is 9000 feet, so it’s quite cold in the early morning.
