Lighthouse at sunrise

This is Bonavista Lighthouse in Newfoundland, Canada, at sunrise. I used a 24mm focal length for this shot, and the wide angle lens was positioned about 6 feet to the fence. That made the foreground disproportionately large compared to the background – a technique I use a lot when taking pictures of landscapes, architecture, and many other subjects. In a picture like this, it’s essential to have complete depth of field. My settings were 1/30, f/22, and 500 ISO. The light in the lighthouse was not working, so I used Photoshop to simulate it. To maximize depth of field, I focused to 8 feet into the frame. That number comes from my quick and easy formula for hyperfocal distance: Take the focal length of the lens – 24mm in this case – and divide it by 3. That number in feet is where you focus. This only works with wide angle lenses.
