This is a rainbow grasshopper I photographed in Arizona. I used a ring flash which is perfect for macro work because the light wraps around the small subject and it imitates soft and diffused illumination from a cloudy sky. Since depth of field is significantly reduced when shooting close up, I use f/32 to regain the focus lost when doing macro. My settings were 1/125, f/32, and 800 ISO. Note the shutter speed in this case doesn't determine sharpness. It is the flash duration. The length of time the light inside the flash is on freezes any kind of movement.
