La Paz, Bolivia, is the highest capital in the world at 12,000 feet (3650 meters). Only 20 minutes outside the city are unusual and dramatic badlands that are higher in elevation than the urban areas. This scene was at 13,000 feet. The Andes Mountains that form a backdrop to the city are an astonishing 21,000 feet. Photographing in this area forces you to move slowly because of the thin air. This image was taken with my medium format film camera, the Mamiya RZ 67, in the late 90's. I scanned the 6x7cm transparency with an Imacon scanner for superior quality. The settings were unrecorded, but I used Fujichrome Velvia 50 slide film and a tripod, and I'm sure the lens aperture was f/32.
