This little boy is of the Karo tribe in Ethiopia. When I Iead photo tours here, I always bring a large piece of black velvet as a backdrop for portraits. The first time I brought the velvet, no one in my group wanted to use it. Instead, they wanted the natural look of the village in the background. That is, until they saw my pictures. Then they all wanted to use it. A black background is dramatic, it forces all the attention on the subject, and if there is direct sunlight, it blocks the sun and creates diffused light on the subject. I used a 24-105mm lens for this shot, and the camera settings were 1/125, f/9, and 1250 ISO.
